Best Fishing Apps For Your Fishing Trips

Nowadays, smartphones help us with almost everything. There are apps for cooking recipes, working out routines,  and learning new languages. But, are there any apps for fishing? Yes, of course!

In both the Google Play and Apps Store, you will find a handful of fishing apps. For instance, either store has apps for knot tying, weather forecasts, fishing reports, navigation charts, and tide reports. Each app is useful for something. But it also has its limitations. So, choosing the appropriate combination of apps will make your next fishing trip a lot easier.

Here you have a selection of some of the best fishing apps for smartphones.

Fishing Knots Lite.

  • Available on: Android and iOS.
  • Price: Lite version is free. But you have to pay $5 for the Pro version.

As no one should enter a gunfight with a knife, you should not go fishing without the appropriate knot. With the Fishing Knot Lite app, you will have access to a lot of different knots for a wide variety of purposes.

The app is quite easy to use. Inside it, you will find instructions on how to tie the knots, the breaking strength, and on which lines it works best.

Fishing Knot Lite has everything organized in categories. So, let’s say, for example, that you need a line-to-line knot to tie two fishing lines of the same diameter. All that you need to do is to click on the respective image, and you will find all the knots that will get the job done.

The thing we like the most about this app is that it is free. However, the apps show some annoying ads from time to time. Nothing that the airplane mode can’t solve, though. Alternatively, you can buy the pro version

Pros:

  • Free.
  • Intuitive,
  • The app has everything you need to learn how to tie a knot.

Cons:

  • Annoying ads.
  • The pro version costs $5.

Navionics.

  • Available on: Android and iOS.
  • Price: 2-week free trial. Then you must pay a subscription.

From the world-famous Garmin, here you have Navionics. With this app, you will have access to navigations charts, sonar charts, GPS, and information about the weather and tide. The app allows you to concentrate more on fishing and less on navigating. It is like having a first mate in your boat.

As you can see, this is a great app, especially if you don’t have a boat equipped with sonar or GPS. But even if you do, this app has a lot to offer. For instance, you can store all the information about your favorite fishing spots in the app and find the closest route between two destinations.

Navionics is not a cheap app. Still, the perks of having it on your phone are priceless. We highly recommend it, especially if you are an avid angler.

Pros:

  • Up-to-date navigation and sonar charts.
  • Weather and tide information.
  • Easy to use.

Cons:

  • Expensive.
  • Subscriptions.
  • Drains the battery quite fast.

Fish Planet.

  • Available on: Android and iOS.
  • Price: Part of the information is free. You have to pay $5 to have full access.

Beginner anglers will love this app. Inside it, you will see pictures of various fishes. Once you touch one, you will have access to length, weight, life expectancy, relevant information about the species, and fishing methods.

The fishing section is the one we like the most. Fishing time, bait, fishing methods, and which are the best places to fish that particular spice is the information that you will find inside this subdivision.

There are over 280 fish species from around the globe. The downside is that not all the information is available. If you wish to have full access, you must pay a small fee. Paying will also grant access to a bite calendar. It shows the time frame where that particular fish is more active, which is perfect when it comes to planning a successful fishing trip.

Pros:

  • A lot of information is available in the free version.

Cons:

  • You have to pay to have full access.
  • The interface is a little messy.

Fishangler

  • Available on: Android and iOS.
  • Price: Free.

Think of Fishangler like some sort of Facebook for anglers. With it, you can connect and share your fishing experience with other people around the globe.

But that isn’t the great feature of this app. It also happens to be a journal; where you can write your most recent catches.

The fishing log also stores the weather and location of your catch. Additionally, you can write which fishing tackle you used to land the fish. The more information you type, the better. Why? Well, this information might come in handy to evaluate different approaches and choose the correct combination of gear, weather, time, and location. If you want, you can even share your logs with the Fishangler community.

Fisherangler also provides a 7-day weather forecast. But if that is not enough for you, you also have access to a fish report. The report contains information about which are the best hours to fish and the approximate number of active fishes. With this information at hand, you can maximize your daily catch.

Fishing Points.

  • Available on: Android and iOS.
  • Price: Basic features are free. You must pay $2.18 or $0.91 for a monthly or yearly subscription, respectively.

Using maps for fishing is as old as fishing itself. But this doesn’t mean that you have to stick with the old ways forever. And with Fishing Points, you don’t have to do so!

The app works with google maps, and you can use it as GPS. Additionally, you can save your favorite fishing locations, hotspot, trolling routes and tracks, and points of interest. Fishing Points is a great companion when it comes to choosing the route for your fishing trip.

On top of that, paying for the premium version allows you to store unlimited locations on your map!

Pros:

  • For most anglers, the free version is more than enough.
  • Friendly interface.

Cons:

  • The free version of the app has annoying ads.
  • The premium version is not a one-time payment.

Fishing and Hunting Solunar Time.

  • Available on: Android and iOS.
  • Price: Both free and premium ($3) versions are available.

Solunar time and forecast are crucial for both hunters and anglers. It gives you information about the peak hours of animal activity. The app uses moon phases and the sun position to make such predictions. As you can see, having this information is extremely helpful. With it, you can maximize your catch and optimize your fishing hours.

The free version allows you to check the current weather forecast, solunar calendar, and tides report. But if you want to have a complete report of the days to come, you must purchase the premium version. Additionally, with it, you can see how fishing looks like at any place in the world.

Cons:

  • Adds.
  • The premium version has mixed reviews.

Fish Rules.

Before starting any fishing trip, you should get acquainted with the local regulations. It could take some time to find and understand all of them. That’s the reason we bring you Fish Rules.

The app has everything you need to know about the season, daily bags, minimum sizes, and fishing methods regulations. Fish Rules also gives you information about whether or not the fish is safe to eat. Sadly, some waters have traces of heavy metals such as mercury. Thus, eating fishes from these waters could be potentially dangerous.

Fishing Rules have regulations for both fresh and saltwater. Unfortunately, the app only works in the U.S. And, it doesn’t cover all the territory. Still, it has the regulations of all major fishing spots, so this is not much of a problem.

Additionally, you can create a fishing log with information about your catch.

Pros:

  • Free.
  • Most fish spices have a picture so you can easily identify your catch.

Cons:

  • The app doesn’t work outside the US.
  • Limited log space.

Fishidy.

  • Available on: Android and iOS
  • Price: $9.99/month or $49.99/year subscription.

Fishing is a sport that requires a lot of attention to detail and patience. Most elite anglers have been in the business for many years. Learning and practicing different fishing techniques, tackle combination, and approaches. So, if you have an opportunity to learn from them, you should take it without hesitation!

And what a better place to exchange information and to ask for help than a social network? Fishidy connects you with other fellow anglers. The app is full of tips and recommendations to improve your angling skills. Additionally, you will have access to local fishing spots and reports of the major fisheries in the U.S.

Whenever you catch a fish, you can save all the information about it on your fishing log. The app automatically stores the weather condition and location of your catch.

If you choose to pay the membership, you will have access to:

  • Navigation assistance.
  • Tips for elite anglers.
  • Underwater structure locations.
  • Accurate location for fishing spots.
  • Weather identification for optimum fishing.

Pros:

  • The free version has enough information for the casual angler.
  • Has information about all the major waterways in the U.S.

Cons:

  • It doesn’t work outside the U.S.
  • Pricy.

Ikijime Tool.

If you decide to harvest the fish, you should know how to dispatch it. There are many ways to do it, some messier than others.

But if you are new to the angling world, you might be like Jon Snow. You know nothing. By searching the fish in the app, you will see information about how to handle it and kill it.

The app shows you, with pictures, where you should strike to kill the fish. According to the developers, their methods don’t affect meat quality. Still, you are the ultimate judge.

Sadly, the lite app doesn’t work as smoothly as the premium and extreme versions. We tried to use it, and it kept crashing. But not all hope is lost; the pay-to-use version doesn’t have this problem. Thus, you must make a one-time payment to be able to unrestricted access the information.

Pros:

  • Good for beginners.
  • Massive database.

Cons:

  • Lite version crashes.
  • The interface is not user-friendly.
