The HDS series of Lowrance fish finders are top-end finders meant for serious and professional anglers. The coolest part about the HDS-7 is undoubtedly the fact that touchscreen technology has finally made its way into as niche of a use as sonar imaging devices for fishing. This isn’t just a gimmick though, the Lowrance HDS-7 Gen 2 Touchscreen ChartPlotter is a fantastic fish finder as well and used by some of the most skilled anglers all over the world.

Lowrance HDS-7

The Lowrance HDS-7 has a seven inch screen that comes in at an impressive resolution of 460×640 pixels. With the high resolution and the full VGA color you’re sure to never miss a detail. The LED backlighting ensures you’ll be able to use this fish finder no matter where you’re at.

Finder System

The sonar system boasts 500W of power and with the right transducer you’ll find yourself able to operate almost anywhere with little to no trouble. With the optional Broadband scanner you’ll be able to see down to 3000’ feet, making this the perfect fish finder to take almost anywhere.

You’ll have to purchase your own transducer separately however. A Broadband capable one is highly recommended for the best experience, but this finder loses some points here since it doesn’t come with one by default.

Additional Functions

The device’s GPS is state-of-the-art and it comes loaded with great software to use. It can run a wide variety of mapping software, from Navionics Gold to C-MAP or whatever you might prefer. The Insight Genesis software is probably the coolest feature related to the GPS. With this innovative software, you’ll find yourself able to make your own personalized maps of the waters you frequent using the readings from your transducer and even share them online.

This fish finder even has an Ethernet port, so you’ll be able to purchase maps and be able to access them instantly from your unit. No need to buy them on your computer, transfer them to an SD-card and then load them in. Buying new charts just got a whole lot more convenient.

Ease of Use

The interface uses the touchscreen to great effect, you’ll quickly find yourself able to intuitively move through menus like a pro. The touchscreen also means that you won’t have to spend time cleaning buttons when they get fouled from marine air, so it’s a win-win situation for the avid angler.

Once you’ve used the touchscreen for a while you’ll wonder how you ever got along without one, it puts this fish finder into a whole new level of easy usage.

Ease of Use Rating: 10/10

If you’re a professional, or even just an intrepid marine fisherman who wants only the best, you’ve found it here. The cost might be a bit high, but the Lowrance HDS-7 Gen 2 is worth every penny of the initial price. Like any wise investment, it’s sure to return good dividends, and it’s far from the highest priced unit on the market although it can certainly compete with them. This high-tech, advanced fish finder is exactly the one you’ll want to have if you’re serious about marine fishing.
