Our Reviews: The 10 Best Fishing Poles for Kids

Play22 Fishing Pole for Kids

  • Lightweight Fishing Rod Specifically For Children...

Features:

  • Pole length: 65 inches
  • Type: Spincast
  • Material: Aluminum
  • Foam handle
  • Telescopic rod
  • 36 pieces of tackle
  • Tackle box and bait net included

Initially, you might think that the price is a little high. But this rod already comes with its reel, tackle box, bag, 36 pieces of tackle, spincast reel, bait net, and carry bag. In short, it has everything your daughter or son needs to start fishing.

The telescopic pole is 65 inches long and has full aluminum construction. It isn’t too strong. But it is unlikely for a kid to hook a massive fish. Furthermore, the foam handles are big enough for kids between 4 to 10 years old.

The carry bag has enough room to hold the rod, net, and tackle box at the same time. Portability is not a problem with the Play22 fishing pole for kids. On the other hand, the tackle box has two storage areas. It lacks removable dividers. But we think that the layout is enough for all the tackle that comes with the rod and more.

Pros:

  • It has everything you need out of the box
  • Comes with a carry bag and net
  • Lightweight

Cons:

  • Lacks a removable butt for easier cleaning
  • Not suitable for saltwater

PLUSINNO Kids Fishing Pole

Features:

  • Pole length: 47.25 and 59.05 inches
  • Type: Spincast
  • Material: FRP
  • Foam handle
  • Plastic reel seat with hoods
  • Telescopic rod
  • 43 pieces of tackle
  • Tackle box and travel bag

Did you like the previous fishing kit for kids, but you want something from a widely known brand? If so, make sure to check this fishing pole for kids by PLUSINNO.

You can choose between eight colors and two lengths: 47.25 and 59.05 inches. The first one is better for younger children, while the latter is more suitable for kids around 10 years old. Like the previous option, the PLUSINNO kids fishing pole comes with a baitcasting reel, bag, tackle box, and 43 pieces of terminal tackle.

The pole has a fiber-reinforced plastic construction (FRP) with 3 or 4 sections depending on the model you end up buying. Its weight, 4.23 or 4.86 ounces, was something that surprised us. However, you get the same baitcasting reel, plastic reel seat, and EVA handles. The overall construction is more than enough to cope with any fish your kid manages to hook.

As expected, the box for the tackle has plastic construction. It has one large compartment and five smaller chambers. Both the tackle box and the rod with its reel fit inside the 16.7×4.72 inches travel bag.

Pros:

  • Comes with a large selection of terminal tackle
  • Different lengths and colors to choose
  • Remarkably light

Cons:

  • It is more suitable for kids younger than 7
  • The spool doesn’t hold too much line (15 yards)

Ugly Stik GX2 Fishing Rod and Spinning Reel Combo for Youth Anglers

Features:

  • Pole length: 5 feet
  • Type: Spinning
  • Material: Graphite and fiberglass
  • Foam handle
  • 2-Piece rod
  • Graphite reel seat
  • Graphite reel with aluminum spool
  • Stainless steel line guides

Now, the last two options were for kids up to 10 years old at most. Older anglers might need something bigger and better. For those, we bring the widely known Ugly Stik GX2 in its 2-piece youth version.

Naturally, this is a much more expensive fishing rod for kids. But it is more durable and reliable. In short, the rod will pay itself in time.

In contrast with the other two options, the Ugly Stik GX features a 2-piece graphite and fiberglass composite construction. Therefore, you can be sure that this rod won’t break on you.

The EVA foam handles are also larger and more comfortable than any other fishing rod for kids that we’ve reviewed thus far. It features a graphite reel seat, and yes, it does come with the reel. This time, however, it is a graphite spinning reel. As you might have guessed, it is much better than the previous two. First, it handles more fishing lines, about 150 yards, and it is also smoother.

However, consider that this is a fishing pole for anglers who are 10 years old at least. A younger person won’t be able to handle such a pole. Not because of its weight. But for the length and what the kid might catch.

Pros:

  • Long-lasting construction
  • Suitable for saltwater angling
  • Good sensitivity
  • Versatile

Cons:

  • Not suitable for anglers below 10
  • Doesn’t comes with a bag
  • Requires more experience to handle

Features:

  • Pole length: 47.25 and 59.05 inches
  • Type: Spinning
  • Material: FRP
  • Foam handle
  • Plastic reel seat with hoods
  • Telescopic rod
  • 43 pieces of tackle
  • Available with bag

The PLUSINNO Telescopic spinning is slightly more expensive than the previous PLUSINNO fishing pole for kids we reviewed. However, a few different things justify the price.

The spinning rod has the same construction as before. That is a plastic FRP blank with EVA foam handles. This time, however, the grip area has more cushioning and is slightly larger. You can choose between two colors: Black or blue. Plus, you choose between getting it with or without a bag.

Like before, you must decide between the 45.25 and the 59 inches model. Keep in mind that the larger pole is also more expensive. Both models come with the same spinning reel. It has a plastic body with an aluminum spool, but nothing impressive. But it is just fine for the price.

This time you won’t get a box to keep your tackle. But you get the same number of pieces of equipment, plus a spool of line.

Pros:

  • Comes with everything you need to start fishing
  • Interchangeable handle
  • Lightweight

Cons:

  • Not suitable for anglers older than 8
  • The reel is not enough, and the line is prone to get tangled

Shakespeare Youth Fishing Kits

Shakespeare 1402878 S Disney Cars Fishing Kit
  • 2'6" all-in-one rod and reel with line
  • Updated design featuring a round knob, thumb...
  • On/Off instant anti-reverse bearing

Features:

  • Pole length: 30 inches
  • Type: Spincast
  • Material: Fiberglass
  • Plastic handle
  • Single-piece rod
  • Plastic reel with aluminum spool
  • Casting dummy

Shakespeare Youth is arguably the best fishing pole for toddlers that you can find today. You can choose from several different models. Each one has a skin. Disney Cars, Frozen, Toy Story, and Iron Man are among the options.

The fishing pole is 30 inches long. Naturally, this is a rod meant for the little ones and might small fish that they might hook. Nevertheless, the Shakespeare youth fishing kit is more like a training pole than a rod for hooking something. In fact, it comes with a fish-shaped weight. With it, young anglers can learn how to cast and retrieve the line.

The spincast reel comes with an On/Off anti-reverse switch. Plus, it features an anodized aluminum spool. According to the supplier, it can handle braid lines without backing. The reel comes with a monofilament fishing line out of the box.

The plastic handle has a finger guard for better control of the rod.

Pros:

  • An affordable option for your kids to learn how to fish
  • Easy to use
  • Wide variety of designs

Cons:

  • Better for practice than actual fishing
  • Doesn’t comes with hooks or any other tackle

Zebco Splash Junior Fishing Reel and Rod Combo

Zebco Splash Jr. Kids Spinning Reel and Fishing Rod Combo,...
  • Package length: 7.62 cm
  • Package width: 22.86 cm
  • Package height: 79.248 cm

Features:

  • Pole length: 48 inches
  • Type: Spincast and spinning
  • Material: Fiberglass
  • EVA foam handle
  • 2-piece rod

The Zebco Splash Junior is available in two colors: Pink and blue. Moreover, you can choose between spinning and spincast versions. Both of them have the same construction and design.

The Splash Junior features a 2-piece fiberglass pole. It is 4 feet long. Hence, it is more suitable for anglers above 5. The EVA foam handles are big and comfortable. Just like the ones you find a fishing pole for adults. The main downside is that the rod doesn’t come with a bag to keep each piece. We recommend getting one to avoid misplacing them.

Still, this fiberglass fishing pole for kids is a super deal for the money. It can handle the occasional hit. Plus, it has enough strength to pull out most small fish.

As we previously said, the rod comes with either a spincast or a spinning reel. Both of them come with a 6-pound Zebco line. The only thing that you need to add is a hook, and your kid will be ready to fish. As with most of the fishing pole and reel combos for kids, the reel is nothing impressive. But it is more than enough for what your kid will use it for.

Pros:

  • This a superb deal for the price
  • Comfortable handles
  • A durable and light rod

Cons:

  • Only suitable for right-handed kids
  • It doesn’t come with a bag to keep both sections

  • Type: Spincast
  • Material: FRP and ABS
  • EVA foam handle
  • Telescopic fishing rod
  • 37 pieces of tackle included
  • Bag, tackle box, and fishing net included

Lanaak offers another affordable fishing kit for kids. The telescopic rod comes with a spincast reel, 37 pieces of gear, a fishing net, a bag, and a tackle box, everything for under 40 bucks. An amazing deal if you ask us.

The fiber-reinforced plastic and ABS composite construction are sturdy enough to handle the occasional drop. However, the pole is fragile. Thus, it won’t last long if abused.

The Lanaak kit features a 65 inches long fishing pole for kids. It is longer than any of the other kits we’ve reviewed thus far. Therefore, we only recommend this one for anglers who are at least 10 years old. The good news is that collapses to 17 inches, making it extremely portable.

Again, the spincast reel that comes with the rod is nothing extraordinary. It comes already spooled with 200 feet 8-pound test fishing line. Sometimes it might get stuck. You will need to open the reel to get it working again.

Pros:

  • Comes with everything you need
  • It comes with a beginner’s guide
  • Available in blue and pink colors

Cons:

  • It is not the most durable fishing rod for kids
  • Reel gets stuck at times

Features:

  • Pole length: 36 inches
  • Type: Spinning
  • Material: Graphite and fiberglass construction
  • EVA foam and cork handle
  • Single-piece rod
  • 7-year warranty on the rod

Although it is not rated a fishing pole for kids. Its size, weight, and construction make this dock runner rod suitable for young anglers.

Like most Ugly Stiks available in the market, the Dock Runner features a fiberglass and graphite composite construction. Thus, this fishing pole for kids is both sensible and strong. Perfect for young anglers who already have some experience.

The pole is 36 inches long. It neither breaks nor collapses. However, with this size and weight, portability is the least of your worries.

The Ugly Stik Dock Runner features EVA foam and cork handles. Like the rod, they are small. But long enough to accommodate a kid’s hand. Plus, it comes with a spinning reel. As expected, it has an anti-reverse switch and a 5.2:1 gear ratio. All classic features are among the Ugly Stik family of rods.

Sadly, this fishing rod for kids doesn’t come with a travel bag or any tackle. However, you get one hell of a rod at a decent price. On top of that, you get a 7-year warranty on the rod.

Pros:

  • High-quality construction
  • Durable rod
  • Compact
  • Suitable for a wide range of ages

Cons:

  • It is not the best option for young anglers who have no previous experience
  • The reel is not as good as the rod in terms of quality

Who wouldn’t like to have the force at his/her side when fishing? Sadly, Yoda doesn’t exist. So, this is as close as your kid is going to get.

The overall construction is quite similar to that of the Shakespeare youth fishing kits we reviewed before. The fiberglass pole is 30 inches long, and it does not break or collapse. According to Zebco, this pole has moderate action and medium-light power.

The handle section doesn’t have any cushioning. Still, it is unlikely to hurt the kid’s hands given the weight of the pole.

The spincast reel has a 2.6:1 gear ratio. It is pre-spooled with 100 yards of 6-pound Zebco fishing line. Sadly, it is only compatible with right-handed anglers.

Like the Shakespeare youth fishing kits, this one comes with a casting training dummy. Use it to teach your kid how to cast and retrieve the line.

Pros:

  • Fiberglass construction makes the rod durable
  • The reel is better than most fishing poles for toddlers on this list

Cons:

  • Only for right-handed kids

  • Rubber handle
  • 2-Piece rod

Closing this list, we have this beautiful Zebco rod. Since it is 6 feet long, this fishing rod is suitable for teenage anglers.

The fiberglass spin cast pole breaks into two pieces, making it more portable. It features stainless steel line guides and a soft rubber handle. As you can see, the overall construction feels more premium than most other rods on this list. Naturally, this reflects in the price. Nevertheless, keep in mind that this is a fishing pole for kids who are 10 years old at least.

The moderate-fast action and medium-light power are ideal for panfish, trouts, walleye, and even bass. With the Zebco Roam, your kid will have a fishing pole for the years to come.

The spincast reel has a dial-adjustable drag, metal gears, ceramic pick-up pins, stainless steel front cover, QuickSet anti-reverse, and a swappable knob. Again, the reel feels and looks better than any other reel on this list. The spool is already full with 110 yards of 10-pound Zebco fishing line.

Pros:

  • Durable construction
  • Easy to use
  • Long-lasting investment
  • Great value for your money

Cons:

  • Not suitable for toddlers
  • It doesn’t come with a bag to keep both pieces together

Best Fishing Pole for Toddlers: Shakespeare Youth Fishing Kits

Shakespeare 1402878 S Disney Cars Fishing Kit
  • 2'6" all-in-one rod and reel with line
  • Updated design featuring a round knob, thumb...
  • On/Off instant anti-reverse bearing

If you are looking for a fishing pole for your 3-year-old kid, you can’t go wrong with the Shakespeare Youth fishing kits.

Both the Zebco/Quantum and this one have the same build quality and length. However, the Shakespeare fishing rod for toddlers is more affordable. Plus, there are several models available with different skins. These two are the only advantage of this rod. In anything else, they are practically the same.

This was a tough fight. All three are suitable choices. Still, we believe that the PLUSINNO Kids fishing pole has the edge here.

First, it has a better build quality. Both the blank and the line guides look strong enough to handle the strain of small fish. The reel is also smoother than the one found in the Play22 and Lanaak fishing poles for kids. It also packs more pieces of tackle than the other two.

Sure, you might miss the bait net, and it is slightly more expensive. Still, it is a better deal altogether. Plus, you have several colors to choose from and two different lengths depending on your kid’s age.

Now, if your kid has 10 or more, the Zebco Roam Orange is the best option for you.

It has a durable fiberglass construction, which is more resistant to hits than graphite. In addition, it packs small since it is a 2-piece fishing rod.

The fact that it has a spincast reel makes this rod easier to use than the Ugly Stik GX2. Something that your son or daughter will surely appreciate. Plus, it is metallic gears and 3 bearings make the rod incredibly smooth, which is something uncommon on rod and reel combos.

In short, the Zebco Roam is a long-lasting investment. Your kid can use it for many years to come. Until he/she is old enough to purchase a fishing pole alone.

Finding the Best Fishing Pole for Kids: Things to Consider

Fishing poles for adults are not always suitable for kids. The construction, weight, and length are quite different. This is especially true in fishing poles for toddlers. Here, weight and ease of use are the main priorities.

However, teens can, without problems, handle a fishing pole similar to those an adult uses. So, as you can see, the first thing that you should take into account is your kid’s age. We will talk more about this and many other aspects shortly.

Age

As we said before, age is the first thing you must consider. It will determine the average length and weight of the pole. For example, if your kid is between 4-8 years, a fishing pole up to 65 inches is more than enough. Most fishing kits for kids have such fishing rods. In addition, they already come with all the tackle your kid needs.

A 30 inches training pole is also a good idea for the little ones. These might not be the best for fishing purposes. At least he/she can train how to cast and retrieve the lure. This kind of pole is suitable for toddlers.

Length

As we said before, the kid’s age has a tremendous impact on the pole length. Remember that they lack the coordination that we adults have, especially if they are very young. Naturally, the longer the pole, the harder it is to control. In short, if you have a young kid with no previous experience, don’t go beyond 30 to 40 inches. Besides, consider that the length has a direct connection with weight.

Now, the packed length is also crucial. Most fishing poles for kids are either telescopic or breakable. The same rule applies here.

Weight

Unless your kid is some sort of Olympic weightlifting champion, the weight is something to consider. Heavy poles are harder to maneuver, even for an adult. Therefore, make sure that your kid feels comfortable with the weight. He/she should be able to lift the rod and cast it without problems.

However, it is quite hard to know, for sure, how strong your kid is. So, the best thing is to stick to the manufacturer’s recommendations. If the fishing pole says 5+ years, don’t buy it if your kid is 3 years old.

Ease of Use

Let’s say that your kid somehow can lift a high-end rod and reel. Without the proper experience, he/she won’t be able to use the rod. Drag systems, anti-reverse switch, opening the bail, and then closing it; your kid is not interested in these. He/she just wants to see a fish at the end of the line.

Keep things simple. Reels with a single switch and anti-tangle construction are the way to go for inexperienced young anglers. Bear in mind that most kids lack the patience that we have. Something simple that they can control by intuition will get them interested in fishing. In contrast, if the gear is too complex to control, he/she will quit fishing immediately.

If you are going for a telescopic or breakable rod, choose one that your kid can assemble without help.

Durability

Kids don’t have the degree of care that adults have. Therefore, the pole should be sturdy enough to cope with your kid’s heavy hands. However, most fishing poles for kids, especially the ones for toddlers, have a plastic construction. While it is not durable, it is unlikely that your kid will use the same pole from 5 to adulthood.

The most durable fishing poles have either a graphite or fiberglass blank. Some fishing rods for kids have this construction. Thus, if you are looking for something that your kid can use for many years, you should consider getting one of these. Particularly if your son or daughter has some experience.
