As an angler, I like to dedicate as much time to my hobby as I can spare. However, as a father of two young boys, this was not always possible. That’s why I started bringing my kids on my fishing adventures.
Surprisingly, they enjoyed the trips as much as me. Initially, they only helped with my catches. Now they even have their own favorite fishing pole. My ten-year-old loves his Zebco Roam because it is both strong and light, while my five-year-old prefers the colorful spiderman version of the Shakespeare Youth Rod and Reel Combo.
If you are trying to get your kids into fishing, you arrived at the right place. I will share with you 10 of the best fishing poles to get your kids started! I use my kids as testers to gain first-hand insights into each product. Here we go!

Best For Older Kids:
After lots of hours of testing, these are the fishing rods we found suitable for kids around 7 to 12 years old.
Ugly Stik GX2 Fishing Rod and Spinning Reel for Youth Anglers
- UGLY STIK 5’6” YOUTH SPINNING FISHING ROD AND…
- DURABLE ROD CONSTRUCTION: 2-piece, Ugly Tech…
- SIZE 30 Twist-Lock REEL: Designed for Right/Left…
Features:
- Pole length: 5 feet
- Type: Spinning
- Material: Graphite and fiberglass
- Foam handle
- 2-Piece rod
- Graphite reel seat
- Graphite reel with aluminum spool
- Stainless steel line guides
I have nothing but good words about the Ugly Stik GX2. However, it might not be the best option to get your kid into fishing as it is quite expensive.
Still, my old kid had a blast with the GX2 youth. The composite blank felt a little heavy, as he pointed out. On the bright side, he was able to make longer casts. It took him some time due to the pole length and the change of the reel. You see, this was the first time using a spinning model.
One of the best features of this rod, besides the performance, is the handles. They are comfortable and sensible enough for the inexperienced hands of my kid.
Pros:
- Long-lasting construction
- Suitable for saltwater angling
- Good sensitivity
- Versatile
Cons:
- Not suitable for anglers below 10
- Doesn’t comes with a bag
- Requires more experience to handle
Shakespeare Ugly Stik Dock Runner Spinning Combo
- UGLY STIK 3’ DOCK RUNNER FISHING ROD AND REEL…
- UGLY TECH CONSTRUCTION: 1-piece, Ugly Tech…
- SIZE 30 TWIST-LOCK REEL: 1 ball bearing system for…
Features:
- Pole length: 36 inches
- Type: Spinning
- Material: Graphite and fiberglass construction
- EVA foam and cork handle
- Single-piece rod
- 7-year warranty on the rod
Albeit not advertised as a fishing rod for kids, the Ugly Stik Dock Ronner is a no-brainer. It is 36 inches long and light, making it suitable for kids around 7. My younger kid tried to use it. But the spinning reel was too complicated to use, hence my recommendation.
The Dock Runner is like any other Ugly Stik in terms of construction: Composite core, cork handles, graphite spinning reel, and extra-sensible tip. My 10-year-old had no trouble operating the rod from the shore or pier. We even use it for ice fishing!
The only problem we found after testing it was the reel. It gets stuck from time to time, nothing that can’t be solved by cleaning it thoroughly after each trip.
Pros:
- High-quality construction
- Durable rod
- Compact
- Suitable for a wide range of ages
Cons:
- It is not the best option for young anglers who have no previous experience
- The reel is not as good as the rod in terms of quality
Zebco Roam Orange Spincast Rod and Reel for Kids
- MODERATE-FAST ACTION: This 6-foot 2-piece fishing…
- EXPERTLY CRAFTED MATERIALS: Durable fiberglass rod…
- EFFORTLESS FISHING: Zebco’s QuickSet anti-reverse…
Features:
- Pole length: 6 feet
- Type: Spincast
- Material: Fiberglass
- Rubber handle
- 2-Piece rod
Although my oldest son had a little trouble handling the pole at first, he grew fond of it after some days. Keep in mind that this is a 6-foot fishing rod. I only recommend this for kids that are at least 10 as a result.
The handle and ease of use of the reel are my son’s favorite features about the Zebco Roam. He can effortlessly cast and tear the pole down when it is time to go.
On the other hand, the moderate-fast tip and medium-light power make this rod and reel combo ideal for small fish such as trout and walleye. Overall, the Zebco Roam is an investment that will pay itself in time.
A word of caution. Even though this is our top pick. It is not an option for everyone, especially if this is your kid’s first rod. In this case, I would recommend going for another option like the Ugly Stik Dock Runner.
Pros:
- Long-lasting rod
- Comfortable handles
- A durable and light rod
Cons:
- Only suitable for right-handed kids
- It doesn’t come with a bag to keep both sections
Zebco Splash Junior Fishing Rod and Reel
- Package length: 7.62 cm
- Package width: 22.86 cm
- Package height: 79.248 cm
Features:
- Pole length: 48 inches
- Type: Spincast and spinning
- Material: Fiberglass
- EVA foam handle
- 2-piece rod
You can choose between spinning and spincast models. Both come with a 6-pound Zebco line pre-spooled and nothing else.
The pole is 4 feet long, making it more suitable for anglers above 7 years old. Portability is not an issue since the rod breaks into two pieces. It comes with no bag. Thus I would recommend getting one.
Both my kids tested the rod. We went for the spinning version. As a result, my younger kid had some trouble fishing with it. In contrast, my oldest loved it. His only complaint was that the reel wasn’t as smooth as his favorite rod and reel combo.
After some time using the rod, we noticed the handle started to peel off, and the reel became even stiffer. I would recommend constant maintenance if you want to prolong its life.
Pros:
- This a superb deal for the price
- Comfortable handles
- A durable and light rod
Cons:
- Only suitable for right-handed kids
- It doesn’t come with a bag to keep both sections
- The Reel becomes stiff after some time
Play22 Fishing Pole for Kids
- This Is Satisfaction – Great Gift for Birthday and…
- Kids Fishing Pole And Tackle Box Includes Fishing…
- Lightweight Fishing Rod Specifically For Children…
Features:
- Pole length: 65 inches
- Type: Spincast
- Material: Aluminum
- Foam handle
- Telescopic rod
- 36 pieces of tackle
- Tackle box and bait net included
It might be one of the most expensive options on this list. But after putting it to the test, I’ve found that it is a great option for those looking for the whole package.
Upon closer inspection, you will notice that it has everything your kid needs: Rod, reel, hooks, lures, swivels, sinkers, bobbers, a tackle box, and even a fishing net.
My little companions both tried the rod and reel. The older one liked it better as he didn’t need to ask anything to his daddy. However, he outgrew the Play22 as we got more experienced.
My younger son, in contrast, didn’t use the rod much. But he loved the fishing net, though.
Our findings point out that this rod is more suitable for older kids between the ages of 5 to 10. Or for those who want their kids to have their own gear.
Pros:
- It has everything you need out of the box
- Comes with a carry bag and net
- Lightweight
Cons:
- Lacks a removable butt for easier cleaning
- Not suitable for saltwater
Lannak Kids Fishing Pole and Tackle Box
- STARTER FISHING GEAR KIT includes: 65 inch black…
- EASY CAST & RETRIEVE ACTION: Simply cast and then…
- FULLY LOADED TACKLE BOX: The black rod tackle box…
Features:
- Pole length: 65 inches
- Type: Spincast
- Material: FRP and ABS
- EVA foam handle
- Telescopic fishing rod
- 37 pieces of tackle included
- Bag, tackle box, and fishing net included
Affordable and packed with everything you need, the Lannak fishing pole and tackle box are suitable starting points for your kid. I would advise changing the pre-spooling line. The one we got kept snapping every time.
My kid used this pole for a little over a year. Then we had to get another fishing pole because the reel broke down. Still, you will hardly find something at this price point. Besides, you won’t want to spend a fortune to get your kid started.
The rod is available in four colors. All of them come with 37 pieces of tackle that include lures, swivels, hooks, bobbers, a net, and even a crankbait!
Pros:
- Comes with everything you need
- It comes with a beginner’s guide
- Available in blue and pink colors
Cons:
- It is not the most durable fishing rod for kids
- The reel gets stuck at times
Best Fishing Poles for Young Anglers:
Choosing poles for young anglers is a challenge. Both weight and length come into play. But the pole has to be attractive to the kid as well. Here you have our selection of fishing rods for kids up to 7 years.
PLUSINNO Kids Fishing Pole
- Kids will enjoy hours of angling fun with this…
- Choose a lightweight fishing rod that is soft and…
- Adult fishing equipment will be too cumbersome and…
Features:
- Pole length: 47.25 and 59.05 inches
- Type: Spincast
- Material: FRP
- Foam handle
- Plastic reel seat with hoods
- Telescopic rod
- 43 pieces of tackle
- Tackle box and travel bag
Colorful and light, the PLUSINNO Kids might not be the best in terms of quality, but it has everything your kid needs to get into fishing.
To be honest, the bright yellow and blue was the catching feature. Believe it or not, this is an important element. Our findings point out that if the rod is not flashy, the chances are your kid is not going to use it.
The plastic pole collapses with ease. It only took me a couple of minutes to show my youngest how to operate it. The same goes for the reel, which is also made out of plastic.
After putting the rod to the test, we concluded that it is good for catching panfish and teaching your kid how to handle a fishing rod.
Pros:
- Comes with a large selection of terminal tackle
- Different lengths and colors to choose
- Remarkably light
Cons:
- It is more suitable for kids younger than 7
- The spool doesn’t hold too much line (15 yards)
PLUSINNO Kids Spinning Fishing Pole
- 🐟Kids will enjoy hours of angling fun with this…
- 🐟A child’s first fishing trip is exciting for…
- 🐟Introduce your child to the wonderful world of…
Features:
- Pole length: 47.25 and 59.05 inches
- Type: Spinning
- Material: FRP
- Foam handle
- Plastic reel seat with hoods
- Telescopic rod
- 43 pieces of tackle
- Available with bag
Construction-wise, this model is very much the same as the previous PLUSINNO rod and reel combo. This time, however, we have a spinning rod and reel.
You can choose between two lengths. I recommend going for the larger 59 inches model. It might be more expensive. But it is also more durable.
After testing the product, we noticed that the rod bends with ease. On the other hand, the spinning reel only holds a few yards of fishing line. Still, we didn’t think this was a problem as my 5-year-old mostly used the rod near the shore.
This combo comes with a bag to carry all your tackle. But it doesn’t come with a box. I had to Macgyver one out of old plastic containers I had in my shed.
Pros:
- Comes with everything you need to start fishing
- Interchangeable handle
- Lightweight
Cons:
- Not suitable for anglers older than 8
- Delicate pole
Shakespeare Youth Fishing Kit
- 2’6″ all-in-one rod and reel with line

- On/Off instant anti-reverse bearing
Features:
- Pole length: 30 inches
- Type: Spincast
- Material: Plastic
- Plastic handle
- Single-piece rod
- Plastic reel with aluminum spool
- Casting dummy
It was love at first sight with this one. As I said before, the rod has to be attractive to the kid. In my case, my little one loves Spiderman. So, it wasn’t a surprise when he came running with it begging me to purchase it. You can choose between ten different models with unique engravings. It will be easy for you to get one that your kid likes.
The rod and reel are of plastic construction. However, it is strong enough to handle small fish. My little one pulled some minnows on our last trip to Lake Michigan.
One thing that my kid loved was the training dummy that comes with the rod. This way, he doesn’t have to wait to practice his casting and retrieving skills.
Pros:
- An affordable option for your kids to learn how to fish
- Easy to use
- Wide variety of designs
Cons:
- Better for practice than actual fishing
- Doesn’t comes with hooks or any other tackle
Zebco Star Wars Spincast Reel

- PRACTICE FOR LITTLE ANGLERS: Zebco’s QuickSet…
Features:
- Pole length: 30 inches
- Type: Spincast
- Material: Fiberglass
- Plastic handle
- Single-piece rod
- Casting dummy
I used this rod on both of my kids. We found that it falls short to please my 10-year-old. Don’t get me wrong. The rod gets the job done. But your kid will outgrow the pole fast.
In contrast, my younger son had a blast using the rod. He was concerned about the weight at first. But he managed to get a hold of it after some time.
The rod breaks down, making it perfect for travel. I had to help my kid in the beginning as it takes some effort to assemble the rod. On the flip side, the core is strong enough to handle small fish such as trout and even bass!
In a nutshell, the Zebco Star Wars spincast reel is a long-lasting investment as long as your kid is between 5 to 7 years old.
Pros:
- Fiberglass construction makes the rod durable
- The reel is better than most fishing poles for toddlers on this list
Cons:
- Only for right-handed kids
Finding the Best Fishing Pole for Kids: Things to Consider
Fishing poles for adults are not always suitable for kids. The construction, weight, and length are quite different. This is especially true in fishing poles for toddlers. Here, weight and ease of use are the main priorities.
However, teens can, without problems, handle a fishing pole similar to those an adult uses. So, as you can see, the first thing that you should take into account is your kid’s age. We will talk more about this and many other aspects shortly.
Design and Looks
For many kids, the design and looks of a fishing rod are the most important thing.
They want something that is colorful, fun, and visually appealing to them. It’s important to choose a rod that not only meets your child’s fishing needs but also appeals to their sense of style and personality.
Age
As we said before, age is the first thing you must consider. It will determine the average length and weight of the pole. For example, if your kid is between 4-8 years, a fishing pole up to 65 inches is more than enough. Most fishing kits for kids have such fishing rods. In addition, they already come with all the tackle your kid needs.
A 30 inches training pole is also a good idea for the little ones. These might not be the best for fishing purposes. At least he/she can train how to cast and retrieve the lure. This kind of pole is suitable for toddlers.
Length
As we said before, the kid’s age has a tremendous impact on the pole length. Remember that they lack the coordination that we adults have, especially if they are very young. Naturally, the longer the pole, the harder it is to control. In short, if you have a young kid with no previous experience, don’t go beyond 30 to 40 inches. Besides, consider that the length has a direct connection with weight.
Now, the packed length is also crucial. Most fishing poles for kids are either telescopic or breakable. The same rule applies here.
Weight
Unless your kid is some sort of Olympic weightlifting champion, the weight is something to consider. Heavy poles are harder to maneuver, even for an adult. Therefore, make sure that your kid feels comfortable with the weight. He/she should be able to lift the rod and cast it without problems.
However, it is quite hard to know, for sure, how strong your kid is. So, the best thing is to stick to the manufacturer’s recommendations. If the fishing pole says 5+ years, don’t buy it if your kid is 3 years old.
Ease of Use
Let’s say that your kid somehow can lift a high-end rod and reel. Without the proper experience, he/she won’t be able to use the rod. Drag systems, anti-reverse switch, opening the bail, and then closing it; your kid is not interested in these. He/she just wants to see a fish at the end of the line.
Keep things simple. Reels with a single switch and anti-tangle construction are the way to go for inexperienced young anglers. Bear in mind that most kids lack the patience that we have. Something simple that they can control by intuition will get them interested in fishing. In contrast, if the gear is too complex to control, he/she will quit fishing immediately.
If you are going for a telescopic or breakable rod, choose one that your kid can assemble without help.
Durability
Kids don’t have the degree of care that adults have. Therefore, the pole should be sturdy enough to cope with your kid’s heavy hands. However, most fishing poles for kids, especially the ones for toddlers, have a plastic construction. While it is not durable, it is unlikely that your kid will use the same pole from 5 to adulthood.
The most durable fishing poles have either a graphite or fiberglass blank. Some fishing rods for kids have this construction. Thus, if you are looking for something that your kid can use for many years, you should consider getting one of these. Particularly if your son or daughter has some experience.
FAQs
What Size Rod for a 7-Year-Old?
Since kids lack the coordination and strength of an adult, you should never go beyond 4 feet. For reference, I got my toddler a 2.6 pole last Christmas. He loved it.
Do Children Require Fishing Licenses to Fish?
It depends on the age. In some states, kids under 10 do not require to have a fishing license to fish. However, the adult helping them does. Keep that in mind to avoid fines.
On the other hand, fishing licenses for teenagers are typically cheaper.
Can I Take my 5-Year-Old Fishing?
There is really no reason why you shouldn’t. Just make sure to keep an eye out, especially when casting or handling a fish. There is nothing to worry about apart from those two issues.
Final Thoughts
Fishing is a great way for families to spend time together and bond over a shared love of the outdoors. By choosing the right fishing pole for your kids, you can help them develop a lifelong love of fishing and ensure they have a fun and successful experience. So, pack up your fishing gear, grab your family, and head out to the water for a fun day of fishing and family time.
In conclusion, I hope that this article has been helpful in providing you with the information you need to choose the right fishing pole for your kids. Remember, the most important thing is to choose a rod that your child likes and that will keep them interested in the sport of fishing. Happy fishing!
